Low End Theory at Eagle Rock Music Festival from Alpha Pup on Vimeo.
Here’s a small snippet of what you missed as The Gaslamp Killer rocks the Low End Theory stage. For the eighth year in a row, Decibel Festival in Seattle, challenged all of the typical translations of the city being grunge/rock n’ roll. The nature of electronic dance music showcased everything from: techno, house, drum ‘n’ bass, dubstep, downtempo and more. Watch the clip above of Nosaj Thing’s live set filmed by Digifid for (www.droppinggems.com)

“It’s the beats man. That’s it, it’s the same as it was back then, as it is now—the craziest, freakiest music. We play beat music, and that includes rock and funk and soul and jazz and hip-hop and jungle and trip-hop and Dirty South, and a little house every now and then, and it’s happening. Shafiq Husayn came and played a bunch of disco and house records. Prince Paul rocked a hip-hop set. Mixmaster Mike came and just flipped a set that you couldn’t even classify.” — GLK on Low End Theory

“To lovers of ambitious and enchanting dance music, the sound of Los Angeles right now is Low End. Low End Theory, that is—the weekly club night in Lincoln Heights that has brought together a multiracial crew of innovative artists making laptop-based music with the inventiveness of jazz, the spiritual effect of the best New Age and the cool of classic L.A. hip-hop. You might have heard of Flying Lotus. Well, hot on that DJ’s heels is 25-year-old Jason Chung, who goes by the admittedly nerdy handle Nosaj Thing. Chung’s gentle but insistent sound paintings link him aesthetically to indie darlings the xx, with whom he recently toured, and Charlotte Gainsbourg, whose duet with Beck, “Heaven Can Wait,” he recently remixed. With a style that would make him fit in comfortably in both an art museum and behind the board at a Drake recording session, Nosaj Thing will be bringing together high and low for quite some time.” — Ann Powers, LA Times Magazine (June 6, 2010)

“Generally known more as a rap and rock mecca than a dance music breeding ground, Los Angeles is now home to a thriving community of artists working at the crossroads of electronic music and hip-hop.”
